About Rhinoplasty Surgery
Cosmetic nose surgery, also called rhinoplasty is intended to improve the shape, size and general appearance of the nose in order to achieve a harmonious balance with a person's other facial features. Rhinoplasty is sometimes performed in conjunction with a face lift.
You may be a candidate for rhinoplasty if:
- your nose appears too large
- there is a bump on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile
- your nose seems too wide when viewed from the front
- the nasal tip droops or plunges
- the tip is thickened or enlarged
- your nostrils are excessively flared
- your nose is off centre or crooked
- previous injury has made your nose asymmetrical
There is no upper age limit for having your nose reshaped. However, Melbourne plastic surgeon Mr Keith Mutimer recommends that younger people wait until they are at least 16 -18 years old before considering having nose surgery. The main reasons for this are to ensure that the nose is fully developed and that the decision to have rhinoplasty is carefully thought out. Nose surgery can also correct some internal nasal structure related breathing problems at the same time that nose reshaping is being performed.
Rhinoplasty is an inpatient procedure that is performed under general anaesthesia.
Initial consultation: Your initial consultation with Dr Mutimer will last approx. 30 min. Mr Mutimer will discuss your rhinoplasty procedure in detail, the technique to be used, what can be achieved and expected recovery time. Photos will also be taken. Following this you will meet with a nurse for complimentary 3D scanning, with simulated images emailed to you within several days. 3D scanning allows you to better understand what the proposed changes to your nose shape may look like. At your initial consultation you will also meet our Patient Advisor who will take you through rhinoplasty costs and discuss potential dates for your nose surgery.
Pre-operative appointment: 2 weeks prior to your nose surgery you will meet Mr Mutimer again for a final consultation. You will also meet with the Patient Advisor and Practice Nurse to finalise all administration, and discuss pre and post-operative care instructions. Payment for your surgery is also finalised at this time.
