Otoplasty Melbourne

Commonly Performed on Both Children and Adults, Otoplasty Surgery is Designed to Reduce the Appearance of Protruding Ears.

About Ear Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery for the ear, known as “otoplasty”, corrects prominent ears.

Ear reduction surgery in Australia is a very common procedure in children aged around 5–6 years, and is carried out mainly to change the shape and the prominence of the ear/s.

Otoplasty is also performed on teenagers and adults.

Ear plastic surgery involves your surgeon pinning the patient’s ears back closer to the head thus making them less prominent.

Ear surgery can also help correct, reduce, or otherwise treat conditions where the ear folds over either inwards or downwards.

For patients aged 16 and under, Medicare or other healthcare rebates may partially or fully fund ear surgery.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Otoplasty Surgery?

Unlike many other plastic surgery procedures, otoplasty has been deemed a safe, effective, and appropriate treatment for children as young as 5.

Your surgeon may recommend waiting until the cartilage has stabilised and is no longer growing; children reach this milestone at around 5-7 years of age making this an ideal opportunity to undergo otoplasty.

Alongside younger children, otoplasty is also common amongst teens. A great advantage here is that the cartilage of both children and teens is still young, which means it is softer and more malleable, which can positively impact the outcome of surgery.

Along with any other cosmetic or medical procedure, otoplasty is also suitable for adults of any age. Otoplasty can correct prominent ears as well as other deformities due to injury or birth defects.

Cosmetic Surgery is real surgery and requires a general anaesthetic, both carry risks. All surgery has a post operative recovery time. We will discuss this in detail at your consultation. Your recovery time may be impacted by a range of factors, including your type of work, personal responsibilities, support available, and your health history, as well as the surgery itself. All surgery carries risks, complications are not common but they can occur and these will be discussed at your consultations.
