Breast Lift Surgery

Breast Lift Surgery, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure that raises and firms the breasts.

About Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery firms and reshapes the breast without increasing actual breast size or weight. Loss of skin elasticity, gravity and other factors such as weight loss, pregnancy and breast-feeding ultimately affect the shape and firmness of the breasts.

Where a woman has lost a significant amount of breast volume over time, implants may be inserted in conjunction with a breast lift to increase fullness. This procedure is known as SAMBA (Simultaneous Areola Masteopexy Breast Augmentation).

The breasts are enlarged with an implant and the breast skin tightened by removing skin around the areola (the pigmented skin around the nipple). The skin is drawn together like a purse string around the new areola, which has usually been reduced in size. There is no scar from the areola to the crease under the breast as no incision is made.

Associate Professor Shayan also performs nipple correction surgery. In cases where nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples) point downward, the nipples and areolas can be repositioned. A/Prof Shayan can also correct unevenly sized breasts and irregular breast shapes.A breast lift can be performed at any age, but A/Prof Shayan recommends waiting until breast development has stopped. Pregnancy and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of the breasts. Since the milk ducts and nipples are left intact, breast lift surgery usually will not affect your ability to breastfeed.

Recently there has been an increasing number of patients who wish to have breast implants removed with excision of the resulting scar capsule around them.

This procedure has been the subject of more requests than was previously the case due to the increasing concerns regarding the rare but real chance of developing implant-related cancer ALCL, or an increasing desire of patients to try for a natural option, particularly if they have experienced complications of breast implants.

In addition, greater numbers of patients with breast implants placed in a “Medical tourism” setting are finding that they wish to have implants removed and not replaced.

Regardless of the reasons, greater numbers of patients with this preference may be less keen to have breast implants replaced into the new tissue pocket and may opt for the use of their own breasts.

Removal without replacement can cause an empty, deflated breast that can be similar or more pronounced than the situation seen in patients who have undergone massive weight loss or post breastfeeding breast deflation and ptosis.

Associate Professor Shayan has treated many of these patients using an autoaugmentation approach.

This entails using either tissue from their own breasts or chest wall (in the case of massive weight loss) or fat grafting surgery or other forms of soft tissue transfer. In some cases the tissues transferred into the breasts can also remove unwanted surplus tissues elsewhere in the body, which may be viewed by some patients as an additional benefit of such an approach.
