Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

Photo Dynamic Therapy (or PDT as it is often referred to) is medically proven as an effective non-invasive cosmetic treatment to treat and reverse the visible signs of sun damaged and ageing skin.

Many people are familiar with the term IPL (intense pulsed light). IPL revolutionized cosmetic medicine and now PDT is the gold standard of IPL skin treatments. PDT has been in use for quite a few years and is considered one of the major advances in cosmetic surgery this century.

PDT treatments can only be performed by doctors and registered nurses.   It involves applying a special solution to the face, hands, décolletage or arms to make skin more sensitive to light. The solution is called ‘ALA’.  Once the solution has been left on skin for a short while it is removed and then you have our IPL treatment on top of this which provides a much more effective and dramatic result.

PDT successfully treats a broad range of skin conditions and disorders including:

  • Sun damage
  • Age Spots
  • Pre Cancerous Lesions
  • Pigmentation
  • Oily Skin
  • Fine Lines
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne & Acne Scarring
  • Freckles
  • Poor skin quality
  • Enlarged pores
  • Rosacea

You can ‘help turn back the clock’ and have skin which has a better tone, less marks and appears much fresher, younger and glowing.  PDT is a more dramatic treatment which results in more dramatic results.

If you would like to know more or find out whether you are a candidate for this treatment, feel free to talk to one of our Registered Nurses either at The Skin Institute or Brighton Plastic Surgery.

The best age to get a face lift

Face lift surgery (http://www.plasticsurg ..

Face lift surgery is a common plastic surgery procedure amongst those seeking treatment at Brighton Plastic Surgery.  A face lift reduces sagging skin and wrinkles and generally restores a more youthful look to ones appearance.  It is primarily sought out by clients when non-surgical treatments are no longer providing the results that they desire.

We often get asked “is now the time I should be considering a facelift?” There is no “ideal age” to get a face lift.  As we age smile lines get deeper, jowls become more prominent, more wrinkles appear and the skin starts to sag. In some patients these signs start to become quite prominent in their 40’s whilst others remain quite taut and youthful into their 50’s and in some cases their 60’s!

The “best” age to get a face lift really depends on when one begins to show noticeable signs of ageing.  Although people in their 40’s and 50’s often see the best results due to their skin still having sufficient elasticity, the optimal age to get a facelift really depends on each person’s individual circumstances. Skin condition and texture are more important factors in determining whether face lift surgery may be beneficial over ones age.  The above said the goal with facial rejuvenation surgery is to preserve and maintain the face, so the sooner the signs of ageing are addressed, the better and more enduring the results are likely to be.

One important thing to note is that most specialist plastic surgeons will agree that patients can expect their facelift to last 8-12 years, so often a follow up procedure may be required.

Our advice is to book in a consultation with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon who will be able to fully assess the physical factors specific to your circumstances and advise whether a face lift will likely achieve the outcome you desire.

Our website has additional information on face lift surgery including cost estimates and the ability to view the procedure in 3D.  Many patients find this very helpful before a consultation. If you are considering a face lift, feel free to call to discuss any questions you may have or to book a consultation.

We did it! And even managed to be able to walk in the days following. 😀 On the 19th November we had 4 teams competing in the Eureka Climb - a charity fundraiser that, at 88 levels and 1642 steps, is Australia’s biggest vertical race. The event raises much needed funds for two charities - Interplast and Whitelion.

Combined, our teams raised $8300. Well done to all who participated. It was an awesome day! A few highlights to follow:

On Sunday November 19th the team from Brighton Plastic Surgery will be participating in the 2017 Eureka Climb. This will see us climb 88 floors (that’s 1,642 stairs!) all the way to the top of the Eureka Sky Deck to help rebuild young lives and raise important funding for Interplast.

Interplast is a not-for-profit organisation working to improve the quality of life for people with disability who are disabled as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions such as cleft lip and palate or burn scar contractures. They do this by sending fully qualified Australian and New Zealand volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to the Asia Pacific region to provide free surgical treatment for patients who would otherwise not be able to afford access to such services. For Interplast,  it’s all about function and enabling full engagement in society. They also pride themselves on their intentions to leave a legacy. The aim? To do themselves out of a job. They focus heavily on facilitating medical training and mentoring for in-country medical personnel by supporting and building the capacity of local health services. Quite simply, their purpose is to provide life-changing surgery today and sustainable health systems tomorrow.

Interplast has been close to the hearts of the BPS team for over 20 years. Mr Mutimer has been on more trips than he can remember and he is currently the President of Interplast. Whilst Interplast visit many countries in the Asia Pacific region, Sri Lanka is a country that Keith has worked closely with over the years on many levels and last year he was made an honorary member of their College of Surgeons, a very rare honour……..this is a country who, with the help of Interplast, is able to train their own surgeons to support their own surgical needs. Interplast's mission is to do themselves out of a job, to build capacity so they can be self sufficient, Sri Lanka is there! 2 of our nurses are also regular Interplast travellers, using their holidays to help change the lives of people in other countries.

This year we have 4 teams, 2 running (yes, totally mad!) and 2 walking teams (for the more sensible adventurers!!)

We'd love you to support us and this worthy cause as we put our bodies on the line to climb the Eureka Tower and raise money for Interplast.  Please click "DONATE NOW" below if you wish to donate. If not, not a worry, we're just happy that more people know about Interplast. Thank you for your support!
